"Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and Cancer screening forWomen in Peddapuram and Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh"
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are chronic medical conditions and are the result of a combination of genetic, physiological, environmental and behaviours factors.NCDs kill approximately 41 million people globally each year, including 14 million people between the ages of 30 and 70. The majority of premature NCD deaths are preventable.According to World Health Organization (WHO) projections, the total annual number of deaths from NCDs will increase to 55 million by 2030, if timely interventions are not done for prevention and control of NCDs.In India, nearly 5.8 million people (WHO report, 2015) die from NCDs (heart and lung diseases, stroke, cancer and diabetes) every year or in other words 1 in 4 Indians has a risk of dying from an NCD before they reach the age of 70.
The major NCDs are cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes. Physical inactivity, unhealthy diets (diets low in fruit, vegetables, and whole grains, but high in salt and fat), tobacco use (smoking, second-hand smoke, and smokeless tobacco), and the harmful use of alcohol are the main behavioural risk factors for NCDs.They contribute to raised blood pressure (hypertension); raised blood sugar (diabetes); raised and abnormal blood lipids (dyslipidaemia); and obesity.
To address this need,the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW)in collaboration with the National Health Mission (NHM)initiated the screening program for NCDs in Peddapuram and Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh (AP)for the general population, especially women for early detection and management. This program aims to screenwomen agedabove 25 years with special focus on high risk groups such as female sex workers (FSWs), women living with HIV (WLHIV) asthey are at a greater risk of acquiringcancer.
This program was spearheaded under the leadership of APSACS, National Health Mission, APVVP, DAPCU in collaboration with its implementing partners CDC - SHAREINDIA, VHS, HIV India Alliance and GSL Medical College. The objective of this program was overall comprehensive screening and treatment services onNCDs (hypertension (BP), blood sugar (Diabetes), body mass index (BMI),visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) screening for cervical cancer, clinical breast examination (CBE) andthermal scanning for breast cancer, visual oral examination for oral cancer, referral to tertiary care centre (Rangaraya Medical College, Kakinada, Homibhabha Cancer Hospital and GSL Trust Cancer Hospital, Rajahmundry) for further investigations and treatment of cancers and to capacitate healthcare providers in public healthcare facilities for screening of NCDs in Peddapuram and Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh. The program was piloted at Community Health Centre, Peddapuram and District Hospital, Rajahmundry from 18th to 21st October 2022 with the aim to screen 12,400 women in the next sixmonthsat the twocentres.
During the training a total of nineteen (19) clients were screened for NCDs, cervical, oral and breast cancers out of whom six (6) clients who had abnormalities (2 for cervical, 1 oral and 3 for breast cancer) were referred to the nearest Tertiary care facilityfor confirmation and treatment. Two (2) cases with other NCDs (hypertension and diabetes) were asked to report back to the facility for further treatment and patients with high BMI were counselled onsite.In total one hundred and twelve (112) healthcare providers (Medical officer, nurses, ANM, ORWs, TI NGOs) were a part of the training and demonstration sessions at Peddapuram and Rajahmundry. The program which is initiated has the scope to be scaled-up across the state of Andhra Pradesh to reach out to 1.6 lakh high risk women. Andhra Pradesh becomes the first state in India to initiate the program, coinciding with the breast cancer awareness month of October.
"Importance of Hand hygiene practices"

Dr Vijay Yeldandi, Head Infectious Diseases & Public Health, SHARE INDIA and from The American Board of Internal Medicine said that proper hand hygiene practices can prevent patients from infections and visiting the hospital. Under the leadership of the Chief Minister and guidance of Dr Ramakrishna, Superintendent of Government General Hospital a meeting was held on 23rd August on Infection Prevention and Control to address the doctors.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Vijay Yeldandi said that doctors must follow 5S (Sort, Set, Shine, Standardize and Sustain) principles. Steps should be taken to remove biomedical waste bins as soon as they are 3/4th full. The personnel who carry out the sanitation should be provided with special gloves and shoes. Equipment used where there is a high rate of infection should not be used where there is a low infection rate. The meeting was attended by the Deputy Superintendent Jeevan, RMO Sirajuddin and Doctors: Vamsi Krishna Varulla, Prasanna, Karthick, Naval Kishore, Jayashree, Tulasi, Najma, Nursing Superintendent Albina, Shantabai, Joy Mersi and others participants.

Improving #HIVTreatment services for #PLHIV by initiating #ART at #HIVTesting site (LAC plus) #kuppam, #Chittoor district

As the Kuppam LAC plus is located 120 Kms from the nodal ART centre in Chittoor, laborious travel from Kuppam and surrounding mandals to Chittoor through public transport seemed burdensome for PLHIV which was resulting in Lost to follow-up among them.
Under the able leadership of APSACS this activity was addressed and the implementing partner, SHARE INDIA conducted training for the Kuppam LAC plus staff on ART initiations, OI screening, management, recording and reporting from 15th to 16th July 2022. The dignitaries who graced the training program were Dr Ramesh Babu, ADM&HO for Leprosy, TB and HIV; Mrs. E. Lalitha, Consultant DPM, Chittoor District and the team from SHARE INDIA.
The training program benefitted six (6) Doctors, ten (10) Staff Nurses and two (2) Counsellors and as on 15th August, 2022 a total of twelve (12) patients were initiated on ART at Kuppam LAC plus. Initiating ART at the testing sites not only helped in improving HIV treatment services for PLHIV but also reduced travel time and the money spent on travel.
This collaborative initiative under the leadership of APSACS is a way forward to improving HIV treatment services for PLHIV.
"Leveraging telemedicine for Hepatitis B and C screening and treatment"
Viral hepatitis is an increasing cause of morbidity and mortality among people living with HIV, including those on ART. APSACS in coordination with NVHCP collaborated with CDC and its implementing partners in ensuring screening of PLHIV for Hepatitis B &C at the ART centers. There were only 10 treatment centres and PLHIV from 45 ART centres needed to access these centres and there was huge linkage loss. To address the gap and ensure treatment to Hepatitis B & C confirmed positives has leveraged telemedicine successfully. The piloting was done between Machilipatnam ART centre, CoE, Dept. of Gastroenterology Siddhartha Medical College, Nodal officer NVHCP. This pilot initiative helped to link 9 confirmed Hep B & 1 Hep-C cases for treatment.

Commemorating World TB Day
SHARE INDIA commemorated World TB Day 2022 by supporting Government of India's TB Mukt Bharat mission with specific focus on strengthening TB infection prevention and control (IPC) measures in ten Indian states. The event was attended by team members from SHARE INDIA and CDC INDIA at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on 24th March 2022. SHARE INDIA was provided an opportunity to showcase TB preventive activities at a stall organized by CTD at Vigyan Bhavan on the day of the event. Various IEC materials on IPC displayed at the stall included videos (on topics of ideal healthcare facility, donning doffing of PPEs (N 95 mask), story from Mumbai airborne infection control (AIC) facilities) and posters on cough etiquettes and Do's and Don'ts of AIC measures. The posters were translated into various regional languages of project states. Poster highlighting successes from AIC Mumbai project was also displayed at the event. The stall was visited by Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar, Hon'ble Minister of State, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare; Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Hon'ble Minister, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and members from CTD (Dr. Alok Mathur, ADDG-TB, Dr. Vivekanand Giri, Jt. Director- TB, etc.) and other partner organizations. The successes of projects of SHARE INDIA (Expand ELEVATE, End TB in Dharavi, Latent TB Infection prevalence in Mumbai, Household contacts Active and Latent TB infection in Nagpur and IPC in Mumbai) were covered in INDIA TB Report 2022, that was released by the Health Minister, Government of India on the occasion of the event.

SHARE INDIA's project coordinator of LTBI Mumbai project, Ms Smita Waghmare, received a token of appreciation from the district TB officer (DTO) and medical officer, district TB center (MO-DTC) of Andheri-East district for her selfless contribution to TB program.
ETBD Project
SHARE INDIA's ETBD project team participated in the activities planned by district TB centre, Dadar on occasion of the World TB Day. The activities included street play, patient melava (patient meeting), health exhibition and other TB awareness activities in the community.
HAaLT Project
SHARE INDIA's HAaLT project team initiated the campaign on enhanced paediatric diagnosis on World TB Day addressing MO and NTEP staff in rural Nagpur.

"Observance of Global Hand Washing Day"
BOLSTER - #InfectionPreventionandControl (IPC) project team had called for observation of "Global #HandWashing Day" on 15th #October 2021 across the 21 intervention facilities in the state #AndhraPradesh. As a part of this endeavor, #IPC teams across 21 facilities prepared posters depicting the importance of Hand washing in #Healthcarefacilities (HCFs) based on the theme of, “Our Future is at Hand – Let's move forward Together”.
Among the #posters submitted, “3 best posters” were selected by #CDC - #SHAREINDIA panel which are as follows:

The "Infection Prevention Control team presents activities to APSACS"
The Infection Prevention Control (IPC), SHARE INDIA team headed by Dr Prashant Vennela met Dr Hymavati, Director of Health (DH) and Project Director (PD) APSACS on 11th January, 2022 in Vijayawada. The main purpose of the visit was to present the observations of Infection Prevention Control practices in Ophthalmic Operation Theatres and Central Sterile Supplies Department which was conducted from November to December 2020 across 21 healthcare facilities (11 medical hospitals & 10 district hospitals) in Andhra Pradesh.

As #India continues to battle tuberculosis (TB) one of the most infectious diseases that kills an estimated 480,000 Indians every year and more than 1,400 every day, SHARE INDIA joined hands with the Delhi Police to improve diagnostic care in the community.
Diagnosis and treatment for latent TB infection (LTBI) are important for TB, especially in high-risk populations and its high prevalence in India. Our country has a large number of TB cases in the world and there are more than a million ‘missing' cases every year, not notified and most remain undiagnosed or either inadequately diagnosed.
To address this issue, SHARE INDIA is identifying such cases and providing diagnostic care and interventions to reduce #TB and LTBI in high–risk key population of rickshaw drivers in different areas of Delhi.
The Delhi Police joined hands with SHARE INDIA to support this initiate in Central Delhi by arranging camps and helping to apprise TB and LTBI in rickshaw drivers to achieve the National Goal of Eliminating TB by 2025.
The Central TB Division (CTD) GoI collaborated with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), #India and SHARE INDIA and initiated a new project, Expand ELEVATE (Engaging Local Experts in Validating and Analyzing #TB-data to End TB) on 09th September 2021. The aim of the project is to support the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP) by strengthening the ability of programme staff to improve data quality and analyse data for programmatic action.
This initiative was inaugurated by Dr Sudarsan Mandal, Deputy Director General (TB), CTD on 09th September 2021 at New Delhi in the presence of Dr Alok Mathur, Addl. Deputy Director General (SAG), CTD, Dr Ravinder Kumar, Tuberculosis Specialist, CTD, Dr Sanjay Mattoo, Jt. Director, CTD and other officials from CTD. Dr Satish Kaipilyawar, Associate Project Director, SHARE INDIA, Dr Christine Ho, TB Branch Chief, CDC India and Dr Quazi Toufique Ahmed, Public Health Specialist (TB) were present for the inauguration along with the implementation team, Dr Pratibha Pawar, Ms. Maherukh Nasim and data analysts. The launch was virtually witnessed by all the State TB Officers (STO) from selected states and state NTEP consultants from WHO. The inauguration event was followed by a two-day training workshop for the SHARE INDIA project staff by CTD in New Delhi.
The project will be implemented in eleven states of India viz. Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Mizoram, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.
e-Launch of Latent TB Infection Prevalence Project, Mumbai #MovingtowardsTBfreeMumbai
SHARE INDIA supports several initiatives driven by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) and one such initiative was the ‘TB-free Mumbai' initiative in response to the ambitious goal of the Government of India for a TB Free India, by 2025. The MCGM is spearheading this initiative in collaboration with the Mumbai District TB Control Society, National Tuberculosis Elimination Program. SHARE INDIA in collaboration with CDC contributes to this initiative through its several activities in Mumbai targeted towards prevention and treatment of Tuberculosis. As a part of this, a drive for diagnosis of Latent TB Infection Prevalence Project in close contacts of TB patients will start in 24 districts of Mumbai. Technical assistance is provided by CDC India, the test kits, project staff and laboratory support are provided by SHARE INDIA, KEM Hospital will perform tests and upon diagnosis the MCGM will provide treatment and follow-up services through the program. This drive is termed as “Latent TB Infection Prevalence Project in Mumbai”.

Launch of Project HAaLT in Nagpur on 03rd August 2021
Under the able leadership of the National TB Elimination Program the Household contact Active and Latent Tuberculosis Intervention (HAaLT) project was e-launched in Nagpur on 03rd August, 2021 in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital, Nagpur, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and SHARE INDIA.
“The aim of the project is to detect and treat active and latent contacts that will help to bring down the curve.”
The project was e-launched by the Honorable NMC Commissioner, Mr. Radhakrishnan B. IAS.

Launch of the Transgender Health & Wellness Centre, Manipur
Under the leadership of NACO, the Manipur SACS collaborated with ITECH India and SHARE INDIA to launch the Transgender Health & Wellness Centre in Manipur.
The centre was inaugurated by Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh, Honorable MLA and Advisor (Health), to the Chief Minister and Ms. Patti Hoffman, Consulate General, US Consulate General, Kolkata on 25th March 2021.
Commemorating World TB Day on 24th March 2021 – Project STAR
Prior to COVID-19, Tuberculosis (TB), also an airborne disease, was one of the leading causes of death among other infectious diseases globally. Given the gravity of problem, public health leaders across the world, made a commitment to End TB by 2030. India, moving a step further, set up a bold ambition to eliminate TB in India by 2025.
March 24th was commemorated as the ‘World TB Day' across the globe including India. This year the theme of ‘World TB Day', 2021 was ‘The Clock is Ticking' which conveyed a sense of urgency that the world is running out of time to act on its commitment to end TB. It becomes increasingly important, especially in the context of COVID-19 pandemic, which has put the progress of National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP) towards ensuring equitable access to prevention and care for TB at risk.
SHARE INDIA in collaboration with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), India under its project STAR (Strengthening TB Action and Response) planned a series of events on the occasion of ‘World TB Day', 2021, to showcase its commitment towards ending TB.
1. HAaLT TB in collaboration with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation

Medical College focused on improving TB control in Nagpur through a package of interventions to detect and cure latent TB in household contacts. Sensitization session was conducted for ASHA workers by the Senior Treatment Supervisor (STS) to encourage them to spread awareness in the community about TB and LTBI. A unique WhatsApp campaign was initiated for ASHAs to share their 2-minute video explaining TB and LTBI where 3 best videos will be rewarded

2. Inauguration of the World TB Day event Dr Harsh Vardhan, Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare
“World Tuberculosis Day” commemoration at Dr. Ambedkar International Center, Janpath, New Delhi: The event was inaugurated by Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare along with Shri Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Minister of State, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. The IEC posters developed by SHARE INDIA conveying messages on important Airborne Infection Control practices such as ‘Cough etiquettes for patients', ‘AIC Do's and Don'ts for health facilities' as well as ‘Strengthening airborne infection control measures in Mumbai health facilities, 2016-2020' (an e-poster presented at the Union Conference, 2020) got a prominence at this event.

The End MDR – TB Dharavi (ETBD) activity in Mumbai focuses on improving treatment outcomes for Drug Resistant TB (DRTB) cases in slums of Mumbai through redressal of Adverse Drug Reactions (ADR) & linkage of migrated patients to program thereby reducing loss to follow-up and improve TB treatment outcomes.
On 23rd March, 2021 SHARE INDIA team participated in the World TB day activities organised by the National TB Elimination Program (NTEP) and Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) at G/North district. The event ‘Chalta Bolta' – A TB Quiz road show with signature campaign was a great success with TB messages given to public in the form of questions and answers. The winners were given goodies with TB messages. The field Coordinators along with the NTEP field staff distributed handkerchiefs to spread the message of ‘respiratory hygiene' – cover mouth and nose while coughing and sneezing to prevent spread of TB and other respiratory pathogens.

An incredibly proud moment for SHARE INDIA to be recognized by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Altanta on World TB day-24th March as one of the 2021 Global TB Champions.
Multidrug-Resistant TB Dharavi Field Coordinators made >800 calls to drug-resistant TB patients, ensuring an adequate supply of medication, checking adverse drug reactions and linking clients to food/social services, because of their commitment to fighting drug-resistant TB in Dharavi, all the Field Coordinators – Asha Salvi, Darshana Bangera, Deepali Shirke, Komal Chavan, Padmaja Chavan, Priyanka Kawade, Shabnam Shaikh, Shashikant Tambe, Siddesh Khetale, Swapnali Ambekar, Vilas Naik, and Vishal Sakpal

SHARE INDIA projects (Airborne infection control in Mumbai, End MDR TB in Dharavi and Household contact Active and Latent Tuberculosis (HAaLT TB) in Nagpur received a global presence on account of World TB Day, 2021. Tweets by US_CDC India and CDC Global on partnering with SHARE INDIA to support the goal of Government of India to end TB by 2025.
